ENELA In ICAPP Conference Spotlight

6 May, 2011
Guiding the professional development of the ‘new nuclear generation’ – those who will work within and alongside the nuclear energy industry in the future – is one of the key tasks for the European Nuclear Energy Leadership Academy (ENELA), an international conference was told yesterday.

ENELA's director, Jean-Claude Gauthier, told a plenary session of the 2011 International Congress on Advances in Nuclear Power Plants (ICAPP 2011) in Nice, France, that although the current shortage of engineers with practical training and technical experts was being addressed by a number of national and international programmes, the Academy had a unique role to play in identifying a new generation of professionals.

Mr Gauthier, who was also a general chair of the conference, said: “ENELA will prepare these 'leaders in waiting' to spearhead the further development of safe, clean and economical nuclear power throughout Europe and beyond.

He added that the ENELA Leadership Cycle, aimed at future top-level managers, was specifically designed to give high-potential professionals and senior managers – with technical and non-technical backgrounds – a broad understanding of the global nuclear energy sector.

The inaugural ELC, which was successfully launched in March 2011, is spread over eight months and has 20 participants from companies across seven European countries.

In addition, Mr Gauthier said application information and details of the selection process for the Academy’s second programme, the ENELA Management Programme (EMP), would be available in early September 2011.

EMP, which is designed for young professionals and graduates, will be Europe’s first Executive Programme in nuclear energy and will set a new standard in the field of management and training, specifically for the long-term needs of the nuclear energy community. An exclusive 18-week internship is part of the programme’s dynamic mix of lectures, workshops and field trips offering invaluable on-the-spot training. The first intake of EMP participants will be in September 2012.

ICAPP 2011, which ended yesterday, brought together worldwide experts of the nuclear industry and reviews the recent evolution in reactor physics, thermal-hydraulics, materials, operation and maintenance, safety and licensing of nuclear power plants.
