Experts Head To ENELA For First Conference Cycle

28 November, 2011
Nuclear energy experts from around the world have been confirmed as speakers for the inaugural
ENELA Conference Cycle (ECC) – 'Putting Severe Accidents Into Perspective. Learning From The Past, Preparing For The Future Of Nuclear Energy' – which starts in February 2012.

ENELA, the European Nuclear Energy Leadership Academy, announced earlier this month that this first ECC would be chaired by distinguished international figures including Prof. Akira Omoto, of the Japan Atomic Energy Commission, Peter Faross, of DDG Energy at the European Commission, Philippe Garderet, scientific vice-president, AREVA and Prof. Frank-Peter Weiß, chief executive officer of Germany’s Gesellschaft für Anlagen- und Reaktorsicherheit (GRS).

Confirmed speakers now include:

  • Lake Barrett, former site director for the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission, stationed at Three Mile Island after the unit 2 reactor accident;

  • Minoru Kubo, senior advisor of the Public Relations Department at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency;

  • Denis Flory, International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) deputy director-general and head of nuclear safety and security;

  • Prof Mikhail Balonov, head of protection lab at the St. Petersburg Institute of Radiation Hygiene;

  • Wolfgang Weiss, International Commission on Radiological Protection.

ECC programme director Dr Veronika Johnzén said: "In the aftermath of the accident at Fukushima-Daiichi in Japan, analysis continues and public debate often looks back to severe accidents of the past at Chernobyl and Three Mile Island.

"This first ECC is dedicated to providing the 'complete picture' – high-quality background information, presented in a comprehensible and condensed way. Our aim is to deliver facts that will enable participants to draw their own conclusions and make authoritative contributions to ongoing public debate about nuclear energy.

"Specialists and non-specialists will benefit from this comprehensive programme, which will address off-site issues, such as environmental health and public safety, in addition to the on-site perspective of nuclear power plant operators.
